When you make compost, you should make layers of dry and wet materials. Wet materials are food residues and dry materials are straw, leaves, wood ash. Sprinkle a thin layer of wood ashes on the garden compost.

Add green ingredients because of the high level of nitrogen, it speeds up the process of braking down. Compost also needs enough moisture to breakdown, however, too much moisture can cause temperatures to fall within the pile and make it smell. Too little moisture slows down the decomposition rate and keeps the pile from heating up. Check your compost pile’s moisture level once a week and adjust it if necessary by adding water to increase moisture or more browns to help dry the pile out. Turn the pile once a week to move material from the outside of the pile in.
